When I started working at Safe Homes in June of 1996, I had no idea that I would find this work so fulfilling. Victims and survivors come seeking assistance from you, which is very different from other jobs I have had such as DFCS Child Protective Services worker. Our clients do not always follow the options that we discuss, but I have had so many return to let me know that they wish they had. My job is to provide clients with information to empower them to help themselves and others in the cycle of violence.
There is no typical client. Over the years I have seen an array of women of different nationalities, ages and economic status. I have also assisted a number of men who sought relief from domestic violence.
Over the years I have seen the number of phone calls increase tremendously. Our law enforcement, medical personnel and other agencies as well as previous victims refer victims to us.  We also get a number of requests to speak at churches, college classes, law enforcement and social clubs. These engagements allow us to reach out to those who are in need and to educate the community about how to respond to a friend or loved one who needs help.
