As Outreach Advocate, I work closely with agencies and law enforcement in the counties that we serve. The last few months were rather busy. In September we sponsored a training session for social services workers. The large conference room we reserved was almost too small for all the employees seeking information on how to serve victims of domestic violence better.  Every county we serve was represented by at least two social services workers. It was very rewarding to see so many inquisitive and caring people come together in the fight against domestic violence.
In October I was invited to the candlelight vigil in Burke County. The large number of former victims, family members and community leaders that ventured out into a cold and rainy evening to honor domestic violence survivors impressed me very much.
Although we have the support of other agencies and law enforcement, sometimes it can be difficult for victims in rural areas to seek help.  In a small town, people know who you are, where you live and who your family is; therefore, women who want to seek help anonymously are less likely to ask for help from a public agency.  As a result, we continue to find innovative ways to inform rural communities of our services.
