December is a very active month for the Children's Program--what with the holiday parties hosted for the kids by Safe Homes' supporters as well as organizing all of the generous donations that help provide Christmas cheer for so many families.
As always, it is very important to all of us that no child will suffer because he or she is in an emergency shelter during the holidays. We always assure them that Santa will find them to deliver their gifts. He always does.
Many children tell us that the Christmas they spent in our shelter is the best they have ever had. Sadly, they don't seem to be talking about the quality of presents. They seem to be speaking of the peace and safety that they feel for perhaps the first time in their lives. They cherish the ability to lay their heads down and sleep knowing that they, their mother and their siblings are safe. It reminds us that the desire for "peace on earth" starts here, with these children in this place.
